PixelNEO's Selection Tools are used to select specific areas of your picture for further modification, as well as to copy portions of a picture to the Windows Clipboard. Clicking the small arrow next to the tool's icon will display a menu containing the sub-tools below:

After you have made a selection using one of these tools, a dotted outline or marquee will surround the selected part of the picture. Use the Selection Options on the Option Panel to adjust the behavior of the Selection Tools.

Fine Tuning a Selection

When using the Rectangle or Elliptical Selection Tools, you can fine tune the selection using your keyboard's CTRL and ALT keys in combination with the directional Arrow keys. Pressing CTRL plus one of the arrow keys will move the selection up, down, left or right across the picture one pixel at a time. Pressing ALT plus one of the arrow keys will expand or shrink the size of the selection one pixel. Add SHIFT to either of these key combinations to move or size the selection an amount equal to the current Grid settings. Modifying the selection in this manner only affects the selection rectangle and will not affect the actual picture.

Making a Selection Transparent

If you want certain parts of the selection area to appear transparent (allowing the original portion of the picture underneath to show through), click the Transparency button on the Option Panel. This will allow you to select which portions of the selection should appear transparent or opaque.

Moving, Stretching and Rotating a Selection

Once the desired area has been selected, you may move it by positioning your mouse cursor in the center of the selected area. The cursor will change to an open hand . Hold down the left mouse button and drag the selection to a new location and release. You can also move the selection using your keyboard's arrow keys alone or in combination with the SHIFT key.

You can stretch or shrink the selection by using the mouse to drag the handles (which look like this ) at the corners of the marquee. When your mouse is properly positioned over one of these handles, the cursor will change to a pointing hand . Press down on the left mouse button and drag the handle to a new position. As you move the mouse, the selection image will stretch or shrink. Holding down the SHIFT key while resizing restricts the selection’s shape to a perfect square. Holding down the CTRL key while resizing will maintain the selection's original aspect ratio, allowing you to size the selection without distorting it.

The selection can be rotated at any angle by using the mouse to drag the special rotation grip that appears to the side of the marquee. When your mouse is properly positioned over the grip, the cursor will change to a hand with an arrow . Press down on the left mouse button and drag the grip in the direction you want the selection to be rotated. As you move the mouse, the selection image will rotate. You can also choose a more precise rotation angle from the Option Panel.

Modifying a Selection

Many of the commands in the Edit, Picture and Effects menus can be used to modify selections. A selected area may be Cut or Copied to the Windows Clipboard, Copied to a File, or Deleted. Compatible images copied to the Windows Clipboard by other applications can also be pasted into PixelNEO to create a selection.

If you wish to duplicate the selection (move a copy of the selection while leaving the original intact) hold down the CTRL key while dragging the selected area to the desired location. Holding down the SHIFT key while moving the mouse will leave a trail of paint, allowing you to use the selected area as a paint brush.

Finishing Up

When you have finished with a selection, and are ready to apply it to the picture, you can press the Enter key, select another tool or click the right mouse button. To cancel a selection and restore the picture to its previous state, press the Esc key. If you make a mistake or drop the selection in the wrong spot, use the File menu's Undo command to restore the picture to its previous state.
